Spoiler alert: none of them have anything to do with getting the “perfect” smile.

If you’re preparing for your child’s first Santa visit, you’re probably asking yourself the same questions every parent does.

What if my child cries?

What if they won’t sit on Santa’s lap?

What if the whole thing feels overwhelming?

As both a photographer and a mom, I get it.

So before you head to your child’s first Santa visit, here are five things I wish every parent knew.

What Years of Photographing Santa Sessions Have Taught Me

After photographing hundreds of children meeting Santa over the years, I’ve learned something important:

The photos families love most aren’t usually the ones they imagined ahead of time.

They’re the real ones.

The little moments in between. The shy wave. The curious peek. The proud smile after they finally decide Santa isn’t so scary.

My best piece of advice? Don’t put too much pressure on yourself (or your kiddo). A visit with Santa is about preserving a memory, not chasing the “perfect” photo.

5 Things I Wish Every Parent Knew

Whether you’re planning your child’s first Santa visit or carrying on a family tradition, I hope these five reminders help you head into your session feeling a little more relaxed.

1. This Isn’t Your Average Mall Santa.

If you’ve only experienced Santa at the mall, or it’s your child’s first Santa visit, it’s understandable to have some hesitation.

Long lines. Bright lights. A quick wave, one photo, and you’re on your way.

That’s never been the goal here.

Santa Randy has a way of making every child feel like they’re the only one on his Nice List. He learns names ahead of time, remembers returning families, and adds thoughtful little touches that make the experience feel genuinely magical.

2. Your Child Never Has To Sit On Santa’s Lap.

One of the biggest surprises for first-time families is that there’s never any expectation for your child to sit on Santa’s lap.

Some children walk right over and start chatting. Others stand beside him, wave from across the room, or spend a few minutes simply watching.

Santa Randy meets every child exactly where they are, and we let the interaction unfold naturally. The goal isn’t a forced smile. It’s a memory.

3. The Magic Happens in Between

The photos families treasure most are rarely the ones they imagined before they arrived.

They’re the quiet moments in between.

A child wrapping their arms around Santa. The biggest laugh after he tells a silly story. A little spin around the room before it’s time to say goodbye. Those are the moments that become family favorites.

They’re the moments I’m always watching for.

4. Some Years They Smile. Some Years They Don’t.

As parents, it’s easy to put pressure on ourselves to get “the” Santa photo. But children aren’t robots, and Christmas magic doesn’t always look the same from year to year.

One year they’ll sprint toward Santa. The next they might happily wave from across the room…or decide Santa is absolutely not their guy. That’s okay, too.

Years from now, you’ll laugh about all of it. Sometimes the “crying Santa” photo ends up being the one that brings the biggest smile because it tells the story of exactly who they were that Christmas.

5. This Is Bigger Than Christmas

Eventually, they’ll outgrow the magic.

They’ll stop wondering how Santa fits down the chimney. They won’t race downstairs before sunrise or leave cookies by the fireplace quite the same way. Those years feel endless when you’re living them, but they pass remarkably fast.

If this is your child’s first Santa visit, remember that you’re not just checking something off your holiday to-do list. You’re starting a tradition your family may look forward to for years to come.

These photos become so much more than Christmas pictures. They’re a reminder of the season when they believed with their whole heart. That’s why I hope every family holds onto the magic while they can.

As a Boston photographer of newborns and families, nothing makes me happier than preserving memories for my clients. My journey into motherhood was anything but ordinary. We found out we were having identical twins (a huge surprise!) and a few weeks later, the world shut down. It was 2020 and my pregnancy, labor + delivery experience, and postpartum journey were nothing like I expected.

It was a challenging season, filled with anxiety and isolation, and looking back, I have almost no photographs from that time. I know how overwhelming those early days can be, and I want to give other moms what I wish I had—beautiful, tangible memories, without any of the stress.
