Why Plan Both Boston Maternity and Newborn Photography Sessions at Once?

If you’re pregnant and already thinking ahead to newborn photos—you’re not alone (and you’re smart for doing so!). Between baby gear lists, registry decisions, and trying to stay awake past 8 p.m., planning two photo sessions might feel like a lot. But here’s the thing:

Booking your Boston maternity and newborn photography together actually makes everything easier.

You get to work with someone who already knows your vision, your vibe, and your family. And when baby arrives? You’re not scrambling to find a photographer who has space on their calendar that week.

It also ensures a consistent style, approach, and experience across both sessions. No surprises, no last-minute stress—just photos you actually love.

Why Moms Love It

When you plan ahead, you get:

  • First pick of dates (which matters more than you think!)
  • A consistent look and feel across both sessions
  • Less mental load later on
  • Confidence in your photographer and the process

One of the best things about booking your Boston maternity and newborn photography sessions at once is the connection you build with your photographer. It makes the newborn session feel so much more relaxed when you’ve already met, chatted, and shared your vision during your maternity shoot.

When to Schedule Maternity and Newborn Photos

Maternity: 28-32 weeks

The sweet spot for maternity photos is usually between 28–32 weeks– right when your bump is showing beautifully, but you’re still feeling relatively comfortable.

Newborn: It depends!

For newborn photos, I like seeing babies between 2–3 weeks old. But every baby is different, and some families prefer to wait a bit- especially for more relaxed, in-home sessions.

Some photographers (like me!) offer both in-studio and in-home options for newborn sessions, depending on your family’s needs and comfort. In-studio often means less cleanup and beautiful, consistent lighting. In-home sessions feel cozy, personal, and rooted in real life.

Pro Tip: If posed newborn photography (think props, outfits and more intricate posing) is your thing, be prepared to see your photographer sooner after giving birth.

What to Look For In A Photographer

Whether you’re local to Boston or browsing from halfway across the country, here’s what really matters when hiring someone for maternity and newborn photography:

Experience

  • Experience matters! Like your wedding, this is a milestone you can’t get back. Not all photographers specialize in maternity and newborns, so finding someone who does both well is key. Newborn photography requires more than just a good camera and a love for babies. Safety, posing techniques, and experience all play a huge role in how baby photographers create beautiful images.

Style

  • From light and airy to dark and moody, you can find talented photographers across all styles. Before you start contacting photographers, ask yourself what *you* want your Boston maternity and newborn photography session to look and feel like. What style resonates with you? Once you have an answer- do a portfolio check!

Personality

  • You’re not just hiring someone to take photos—you’re inviting them into some of the most personal, emotional moments of your life. That means how they make you feel matters just as much as how beautiful their portfolio looks.
  • Do you feel at ease talking to them? Do they seem patient, kind, and tuned in to what’s important to you? Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your fourth, you deserve a photographer who makes you feel seen, supported, and comfortable—especially when you’re juggling all the feels (and hormones).

Wardrobe Guidance

  • Listen, the last thing you want to be worried about while navigating late stage pregnancy and those early postpartum days is what to wear. Find a photographer who will help you choose outfits that flatter your body and photograph well.
  • Bonus points if they offer personalized styling or a curated client wardrobe (I do!) for the entire family.

Artwork Design (if desired)

  • Boston maternity and newborn photography sessions often include more than just digital files—and for good reason. Whether it’s a gallery wall that grows with your family, a framed print for the nursery, or an heirloom album your child can flip through one day, there’s something powerful about seeing your memories in print.
  • The right photographer can help you bring those images to life—guiding you through custom options, sizes, and layouts so you don’t have to guess what works best in your space. It’s one less thing to worry about, and one more way to make sure your story is beautifully preserved.

Pro Tip: Don’t be afraid to ask questions! A great photographer will be happy to walk you through the process, share example galleries, and get to know YOU before booking your Boston maternity and newborn photography sessions.

Real Talk: Why It’s Worth It

Boston maternity and newborn photography is more than just pretty pictures. It’s about preserving a moment in time that flies by faster than anyone tells you. The bump you’re carrying now? It will soon be a baby in your arms. And soon after that… a crawling, giggling blur of motion.

These sessions give you a chance to pause. To celebrate. To remember.

And when you work with the right photographer, the process can actually feel fun (yup, I said it!) and like something you look forward to- not just one more thing on your to-do list.

Pro Tip: Years from now, you won’t care if your house was clean or if you had the perfect outfit. You’ll care that you have photos that show your love. Your joy. Your baby.

Bonus: Shopping For Maternity Clothes & Baby Basics

Let’s be honest—finding clothes you feel good in during pregnancy is no small feat. And building your baby registry? It’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options. I’ve pulled together some of my favorite maternity pieces for every occasion (from comfy to camera-ready) along with must-have baby basics to help you cut through the noise. I also included links to make shopping simple—because you’ve got enough on your plate already.

Why You’ll Regret Skipping Maternity Photos

On the fence about investing in Boston maternity photos?

I get it. Pregnancy can feel overwhelming- your body’s changing, you’re exhausted, and nothing fits the way it used to. Believe me, after being pregnant with twins, I really get it. But before you go and write off maternity photography altogether, here me out…

→ It is even worth it?

“Do I really need maternity photos?

When I was pregnant with my twins, I hated hearing, “It’ll be over before you know it.” Because it absolutely didn’t feel like this was going to be over before I knew it—it very much felt like “this is taking too f*cking long and I’m miserable and I’d love for it to be over now, thanks.”

But here’s the truth: this season will pass. And maternity photos aren’t just for right now—they’re for your future self, and for the child who will one day see just how deeply they were loved before they even arrived.

Why It’s Worth It:

  • For your future self, when the blur of early motherhood sets in
  • For your child, to see what life looked like before they were earthside
  • For your heart, when you want to remember the quiet, in-between moments

→ I’m Definitely Not ‘Glowing’…

“I’m swollen and exhausted!

Some people ease into pregnancy, have that glow, and love every bit of growing a tiny human. Others (hi, it’s me 🙋‍♀️) do not. Watching your body change isn’t always easy, and the idea of being in front of a camera can feel… like a lot.

But here’s what I wish someone had reminded me when I was on the fence about investing in Boston maternity and newborn photography—your body is doing something incredible. I hope you feel empowered and strong and know just how much of a badass you are. But if you don’t (because #pregnancy) having these photos to look back at will remind you.

If You’re On The Fence:

  • You don’t need to feel amazing to be worthy of beautiful photos
  • This season will feel different once you’re on the other side of it
  • You’ll be so glad you have them—especially when your little one asks about “when they were in your belly”

→ It’s Too Much Work

“I can’t imagine adding one more thing to my plate right now.

Honestly? I was in survival mode for most of my pregnancy. Planning a photo session felt like too much. Finding a location, choosing outfits, feeling camera-ready—it was all a hard no.

That’s exactly why full-service photography exists. With the right photographer (👋), you don’t have to plan a thing. You show up, I take care of the rest.

Good News:

  • No shopping or decision fatigue—wardrobe and styling are handled
  • Studio or in-home? Your choice, no prep needed either way
  • You get meaningful, effortless images without lifting a finger

Top 3 Questions to Ask Your Newborn Photographer

Welcoming a new baby into your family is one of the most special moments in life, and preserving those early newborn days through photography is something you’ll cherish forever. But with so many photographers out there, how do you know which one is the right fit for your family?

Before you book your newborn session, here are three essential questions to ask any baby photographer to ensure you’ll receive a safe, enjoyable experience and stunning images you’ll love for a lifetime.

What Experience Do You Have with Newborn Photography?

  • Newborn photography requires more than just a good camera and a love for babies. Safety, posing techniques, and experience all play a huge role in how baby photographers create beautiful images.

What Is Included in Your Photography Packages?

  • Understanding exactly what’s included in your photography session will help you avoid surprises and ensure you’re getting the best value. Some photographers offer a full-service experience with amenities (studio, wardrobe, artwork design etc.) and others don’t.

What Is Your Editing and Delivery Process?

  • From light and airy to dark and moody, you can find talented photographers across all styles. Before you start contacting photographers, ask yourself what *you* want your photographs to look and feel like. What style resonates with you? Once you have an answer- do a portfolio check!

As a Boston photographer of newborns and families, nothing makes me happier than preserving memories for my clients. My journey into motherhood was anything but ordinary. We found out we were having identical twins (a huge surprise!) and a few weeks later, the world shut down. It was 2020 and my pregnancy, labor + delivery experience, and postpartum journey were nothing like I expected.

It was a challenging season, filled with anxiety and isolation, and looking back, I have almost no photographs from that time. I know how overwhelming those early days can be, and I want to give other moms what I wish I had—beautiful, tangible memories, without any of the stress.
