Not sure what to wear for your Boston family photography session? Stressed trying to put outfits together for the whole family? Here’s ALL the tips and tricks you’ll need to feel prepared and confident on session day!
8 easy tips for what to wear to your Boston family photography session:
1. Decide on A Color Palette
Create a color palette for your family photos. Choose three or four colors and incorporate them throughout your outfits in varying patterns, solids, and layers.
2. Mamas Choose First
It’s always a good idea to start with one statement piece – usually Mom’s outfit – and then make clothing choices for the rest of the family around that.
3. Keep it Simple
Clothing choices that are visually overwhelming will take interest away from the subject of your family session- you!
4. Neutrals Are Always in Season
Neutrals keep skin tones looking true to life and helps to minimize harsh color casts. A softer color palette lends itself to the light and classic style.
*Want to go all-neutral, but don’t want it to feel boring? I LOVE texture! Mixing up fabrics is a smart strategy to add some dimension to your overall look. A simple cotton shirt is a good start, but adding things like knits, silks, lace etc. can add a beautiful warmth to the images.

5. Consider Your Decor
If you’re planning to display your photographs, consider the decor and colors you have in your home when selecting outfits.
6. Things You Should Always Avoid…
–> neon colors
–> too many patterns
–> clothing with characters, text or large logos
Salon Appointments?
I know these next few aren’t *technically* outfit specific, but they do contribute to the overall look of your photos, so I wanted to include them.

6. Consider Your Nails
This goes for family sessions but particularly for newborn shoots. If you know you’ll be bothered seeing chipped nails or mismatched polish in your photographs, make sure to get them done beforehand. Natural nails and neutral or pastel polish will always look great.
7. Keep Make-up in Mind
Whether you plan to do your own makeup or book with a makeup artist, my advice would be to keep it natural, but plan for more than your everyday look.
8. Don’t Forget About Hair
If you know you’ll look at your images in the years to come and wish your littles had fresh haircuts or that you’d had your roots done, make it a priority before session day.
All the advice, tips and tricks are great, but don’t forget the most important thing…enjoying this time with your family. It can be so easy to just focus on the way we look, but in years to come your babies won’t notice your makeup, or if your hair was slightly out of place.
What your kids will notice is YOU.
You, present in their memories, loving on them and having fun with them in those moments. And that’s the greatest gift of all.
