Tips for What to Wear to Your Boston Family Photography Session
Choosing outfits for photos can feel like a daunting task. What colors photograph best? What styles should I avoid? Should we all match? The questions are endless. But fear not! I’ve included my favorite (easy!) tips to follow when styling your family for photos. Pro tip: hire a photographer who provides a detailed guide, offers styling services, or even better, has a client wardrobe for you to use. Psst…my families get all of this and more. 😉
Choose Your Colors
Create a color palette for your family photos. Choose two or three colors and incorporate them throughout your outfits in varying patterns, solids, and layers. Pro tip: Consider the type of photographs you’re drawn to. Soft colors lend themselves to a light and airy look. Prefer something bolder? Warm, rich color tones may be a better fit.
Styling Mom
It’s always a good idea to start with one outfit and build off of that. With my families I usually style Mom first. In everyday life, we often put ourselves last and focus on taking care of everyone else. For your Boston family photography session, consider your own preferences before selecting outfits for the rest of your family.
Keep It Simple
Clothing choices that are visually overwhelming will take interest away from the subject of your family session- you!
Neutrals Are Always in Season
Neutrals keep skin tones looking true to life and helps to minimize harsh color casts. This doesn’t mean you avoid color altogether, but incorporating some neutrals (beiges, creams, soft grays etc.) is a great place to start. Pro tip: Add texture! Mixing up fabrics is a smart strategy to add dimension to your overall look. A simple cotton shirt is a good start, but adding things like knits, silks, lace etc. can add a beautiful warmth to the images.
Things to Avoid
Neon colors, too many patterns, and clothing with large logos, characters or text.
Consider Your Decor
If you’re planning to display photographs in your home (P.S. don’t let those images die on your hard-drive!) consider your decor. What does your home feel like? What colors will compliment your interior? These are good questions to ask and consider when choosing your outfits.
Salon Appointments
Okay, so I know this one isn’t outfit specific BUT it’s worth mentioning. Haircuts, nails and day-of services are all things to think about! If you’ll look back at your photos and wish you had your roots done or that your littles had fresh haircuts, get those salon appointments on the calendar before session day. Freshen up your manicure or make sure that nail polish is removed. Plan to do a bit more than your usual makeup application for your Boston family photography session. Better yet, treat yourself to hair and make-up services!
Practical Tips for A Successful Family Photoshoot
To make the most of your Boston family photography session, consider the following practical tips: timing is everything (plan your session ahead of sunset or early in the morning to avoid harsh midday light), pack snacks and water (treats keep everyone happy! 😉), be present and play it cool (be in the moment with your kids and go with the flow), hire a professional who loves kids and specializes in Boston family photography.
