If you’re starting to think about maternity photos, one of the first decisions you’ll need to make is where your session will take place.

As a Framingham maternity photographer, this is one of the most common questions I get. Should we go outdoors? Or would a studio session feel easier?

And if you’re sitting there thinking, “I don’t even feel like myself right now… do I really want photos?” — you are very much not alone.

Pregnancy can be beautiful, yes. But it can also be uncomfortable, exhausting, and not at all the glowing, magical experience people make it out to be.

And still… it’s a season worth remembering.

Not because every moment feels amazing, but because of what it represents. And one day, you’ll be really glad you have something to look back on.

So if you’re unsure where to start, this guide will walk you through both options so you can choose what feels easiest and most like you.

Why Location Matters for Maternity Photography

As a Framingham maternity photographer, I always tell my clients that where your session takes place matters more than you might think.

Because this isn’t just about photos. It’s about how you feel while they’re being taken.

You’re growing a human. You might not be sleeping well. Getting dressed might already feel like a full task. And the last thing you need is something that feels complicated or overwhelming.

The right setting helps you relax into the experience instead of overthinking it.

And when you feel comfortable, everything else falls into place.

Outdoor Sessions: What to Expect

Outdoor maternity sessions with a Framingham maternity photographer are relaxed, movement-based, and very connection-focused.

These typically happen around sunset, when the light is soft and flattering. We’ll walk a bit, find pockets of pretty light, and keep things moving so nothing feels stiff or overly posed.

Think less “stand here and smile” and more “just be together, I’ll guide you.”

If you love being outside or want something that feels a little more natural and unstructured, this is usually a really beautiful fit.

Benefits of Outdoor Maternity Photos

Natural, Scenic Backdrops

One of the biggest perks of working with a Framingham maternity photographer outdoors is that you don’t have to do much to make things look beautiful. The setting does a lot of the work for you.

Movement (Which Helps You Not Overthink Everything)

Outdoor sessions give you something to do. Walking, shifting, interacting. Which, honestly, helps take the pressure off if you’re feeling a little self-conscious.

A Location That Feels Personal

If you’re drawn to images that feel less posed and more like real moments, outdoor sessions tend to lean that way naturally. Outdoor sessions give you the option to choose a setting that means something to you. Whether it’s a favorite walking spot, your neighborhood, or just somewhere you like to spend time together.

Studio Sessions: What to Expect

Studio sessions with a Framingham maternity photographer are calm, simple, and honestly… a bit of a relief for a lot of moms.

Everything is ready for you when you walk in.

No weather stress. No figuring out where to go. No packing a million things. Just a light-filled space where you can take a breath and ease into it.

I keep my studio minimal on purpose so the focus stays on you, not distractions.

And if pregnancy has you feeling a little off your game lately, this kind of environment can feel really grounding.

Benefits of Studio Maternity Photos

Everything Is Ready for You

One of the biggest advantages of a studio session is that the entire space is already designed for photos.

  • Soft neutral backdrops
  • Comfortable seating
  • Beautiful window light
  • A curated wardrobe for moms and newborns

Flattering, Consistent Light

Lighting plays a big role in maternity photography. A studio allows for consistency and creates a clean, timeless look that many families love.

A Calm, Distraction-Free Space

Studio sessions are intentionally simple.

No people watching. No distractions. No wondering what you look like walking across a field.

Just a calm space where you can feel comfortable in your body, exactly as you are.

Outdoor vs. Studio: How to Choose

If you’re still unsure, here’s a few things to consider.

Outdoor might be a better fit if:

  • You love being outside
  • You want movement and variety
  • You want a location that’s personal and meaningful to you

Studio might be a better fit if:

  • You love a clean, minimal look
  • You’re pregnant during the winter months
  • You don’t want to worry about weather unpredictability

As a Framingham maternity photographer, I tell my clients this all the time time: there’s no wrong choice, it’s just about what feels easier for you in this season.

Finding A Framingham Maternity Photographer

Choosing a Framingham maternity photographer isn’t just about the photos.

It’s about the experience.

You want someone who helps you feel prepared, not overwhelmed. Someone who understands that this season can feel like a lot. Someone who can guide you without making it feel like work.

Because at the end of the day, this isn’t about having the “perfect” maternity photos.

It’s about having something to look back on and think, “I’m really glad we did that.”

Even if you didn’t feel your best. Even if it wasn’t a glowing, magical season.

If you’re looking for a Framingham maternity photographer who keeps things simple, relaxed, and fully guided, I’d love to connect and help you figure out what feels like the right fit for you. You can reach out here and I’ll help you decide what feels like the best fit for your family.

  1. These are STUNNING! I love your studio space, but your outdoor images are gorgeous too! How can anyone *actually* pick?!

Such beautiful examples of both options! I don’t think clients could go wrong with either decision.

As a Boston photographer of newborns and families, nothing makes me happier than preserving memories for my clients. My journey into motherhood was anything but ordinary. We found out we were having identical twins (a huge surprise!) and a few weeks later, the world shut down. It was 2020 and my pregnancy, labor + delivery experience, and postpartum journey were nothing like I expected.

It was a challenging season, filled with anxiety and isolation, and looking back, I have almost no photographs from that time. I know how overwhelming those early days can be, and I want to give other moms what I wish I had—beautiful, tangible memories, without any of the stress.
