From someone who has been a Massachusetts family photographer (and mom!) for years, I know photos can seem stressful. But they don’t have to!
Before you do anything else, spend some time researching photographers who are experienced in working with young families. Not sure what questions to ask? Check out this post about 3 helpful questions to ask before hiring your photographer. A great photographer will take the pressure off of you and won’t bat an eye when a little…or a lot ;)…of toddler chaos is thrown into the mix.
6 Tips for Stress-Free photos:
1. Prepare in advance
Preparation is key! Lay your outfits out the night before your Boston family photos. Don’t forget to pack a bag with snacks and anything else your little one(s) might need to minimize stress the morning of.
2. Try not to set expectations
“Ok, everyone pull it together and be on your best behavior!” Sound familiar? Welp, same. That was me this year for my own family photos. Spoiler alert: everyone was NOT on their best behavior and there were tears because #toddlers
I do this for a living and it happens- that’s reality! Great family photographers are used to going with the flow, engaging with little ones and finding different ways to get everyone involved.
3. Make it no big deal
One of my biggest tips when it comes to bringing toddlers to a photography session is to not over prepare them. The more you tell them they’ll need to sit and smile, the less excited they may be. Instead, tell them that you’re going to take pictures with your friend, *photog’s name* and she/he will need their help to take photos!
4. Let your photographer take the lead
It can be hard when kids are directed by several adults at once. Consider letting your photographer take the lead!
5. Don’t put pressure on yourself
It can be so easy to just focus on the way we look, but in years to come your babies won’t notice your makeup, or if your hair was slightly out of place. What they will notice is YOU. You loving on them and having fun in those moments.
6. Enjoy the moment
Take the opportunity to unplug, enjoy the moment, be present, and remember why you’re doing this. You’re preserving family memories, making your kids feel loved. No expectations, no worries about the end result, just be yourselves – your photog can handle the rest.
