As a Boston lifestyle photographer, and mom myself, I know how much we share online. Digital files are great for this! But today I wanted to share some of the reasons why printing your photographs matters, too.
3 Reasons Your Boston Lifestyle Photographer Recommends Printing Your Photos
1. It builds confidence
From an early age, our kids love nothing more than seeing themselves in photographs. Sure, they can scroll through our phones (my toddlers LOVE to do this!) but if you’re anything like me, albums on our cell phones grow by the day. Having family photos displayed where your children can see them builds confidence and increases self-esteem according to Judy Weiser, psychologist and art therapist. I loved this quote from her:
“When a child sees a family portrait with them included, they say to themselves…these people have me as a part of what they are. This is where I come from…and I belong here.”
2. Special moments can be revisited daily
There’s no substitute for flipping through a family album or seeing portraits hung on the walls. Being able to revisit meaningful moments with your babies as they grow up is a special thing. Showing them of how small their hands were as they held onto yours, how they snuggled into you, how you looked at them…THAT is priceless. And don’t underestimate the value of preserving those memories some place other than a hard-drive.
3. Great intentions?
For your baby’s newborn session, you opted to get ‘just the digitals’ because it was the more economical option. You reasoned yourself into it; after all, it’s easy enough to print your own photos.
But, more often than not, life happens. Things get busy (ya know, having a newborn and all 🙃) and time goes by. Before you realize it, your newborn session was over 3 months ago. And that to-do list item, printing your favorite portraits, is still unchecked. Your days (not to mention your hands!) are full and making arrangements to get your photographs up on your wall or into an album is looking less and less likely as time goes by. Don’t let that be you!
BONUS #4. A few helpful things to know when printing on your own:
- DRUGSTORE/DISCOUNT PHOTOLABS ARE HIT OR MISS
Places like Walgreens, CVS, Costco, Shutterfly, etc. use printers that are not professionally calibrated and they often make automatic color corrections (which can cause your images to look very different than what you see on screen)
- PIXILATION CAN BE A PROBLEM
Technical explanation: Mass production printers aren’t designed to process high-resolution files. They automatically “compresses” the image to reduce its resolution and make it “fit” their machine. Because the printer is taking something really big (the high resolution image from your photog) and squeezing it into a super tiny file size, the result can be a grainy/blurry photograph.
- PROFESSIONAL FINE ART PRINTS COST MORE FOR A REASON
Heirloom quality, 100% cotton papers, and archival pigment inks are just a few of the characteristics that make fine art prints different. With unmatched color accuracy, custom cropping and sizing adjustments, plus a life-time guarantee from fading or yellowing, there’s no comparison between these and a standard print.
Still feel strongly about printing on your own? These two companies offer wonderful consumer grade products: Artifact Uprising and Mpix
