One of the most common questions I get before a session is, “What should we wear?” If you’re planning your Boston family photography session and feeling unsure, I’ve got you covered with simple tips to help you feel confident and photo-ready.
Choosing what to wear for family photos doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. In fact, with a little planning and the right guidance, it can be one of the most enjoyable parts of preparing for your session. Your outfits should reflect your style, fit your location, and allow you to focus on what really matters: your connection as a family.
Let’s walk through everything you need to know to choose the perfect outfits for your Boston family photography session.

What to Wear for Your Boston Family Photography Session
Planning your Boston family photography session is exciting—but figuring out what to wear? That can feel overwhelming. As a photographer who works with families across the Boston area, I know how important it is to choose outfits that not only look beautiful on camera, but also help you feel confident, comfortable, and connected.
Here’s everything you need to know about choosing the perfect wardrobe for your Boston family photography session.
Start with Neutrals and Soft Tones
Neutral colors and soft tones are timeless for a reason—they photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your faces and emotions. For your Boston family photography sessions, think soft cream, warm beige, muted gray, gentle blues, and olive green. These tones work especially well with the natural light I love to use in my sessions, whether we’re in a sun-drenched field, your home, or a charming Boston neighborhood like Beacon Hill or the South End.
Neutrals also offer the flexibility to mix and match textures and layers without clashing, creating a cohesive look for your whole family. And if you’re worried about looking “too plain,” don’t be—texture, accessories, and subtle pattern go a long way in adding visual interest.

Coordinate, Don’t Match
Gone are the days of everyone in matching white shirts and jeans. Instead, choose a color palette and let each person express it a little differently—think layers, textures, and tones that flow together naturally. This approach feels more elevated and timeless in your final images. Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same outfit. Instead of matching exactly, choose a color palette of 3–4 complementary shades and build each outfit around that. For example:
- A soft palette might include cream, dusty rose, muted sage, and taupe.
- A classic palette could feature blue, soft gray, ivory, and camel.
This approach allows everyone to look cohesive without looking uniform. It also adds depth and a natural, effortless feel to your photos.
Pro tip: Start by choosing one outfit (often mom’s!) and build the rest around it. A beautiful dress can set the tone for the entire session.
Think About The Season
- Spring – Pastels, flowy dresses, and light cardigans work beautifully in the Boston Public Garden or Arnold Arboretum as the flowers bloom.
- Summer – Lightweight fabrics like linen, cotton, and gauze will keep you cool and comfortable, especially for waterfront sessions along the Charles River or Seaport.
- Fall – Earthy tones like rust, olive, and mustard look beautiful against autumn foliage. Layering is key; think sweaters, scarves, and boots.
- Winter – Chunky knits, layered textures can warm up a chilly day and will give your photos a seasonal, cozy look indoors, too.
P.S. Neutrals are always in season! They keep skin tones looking true to life and helps to minimize harsh color casts. This doesn’t mean you avoid color altogether, but incorporating some neutrals (beiges, creams, soft grays etc.) is a great place to start. Pro tip: Add texture! Mixing up fabrics is a smart strategy to add dimension to your overall look.
We’ll choose a location that matches the vibe of your wardrobe—or vice versa. If you need suggestions, I have a list of favorite Boston-area spots I’m happy to share.
Dress Up A Bit – But Stay Comfortable
Your Boston family photography session is a special occasion—it’s worth putting in a little extra effort. That said, comfort still matters. I always recommend choosing outfits that feel like you, just a little elevated.
For moms, long, flowing dresses with movement look beautiful on camera and allow for both elegance and ease (and I have plenty in my client wardrobe!). Dads typically look great in a well-fitted henley or button-down with chinos or dark jeans. For little ones, I love rompers, soft knits, or sweet dresses that allow them to move, snuggle, and explore.
Layers, textures, and subtle accessories can add a lot without feeling overdone. And when you feel good in what you’re wearing, that confidence always shines through in your photos.
Don’t Forget the Details
- Avoid Logos or Loud Patterns – These can be distracting and take attention away from your family’s connection.
- Shoes Matter – Make sure they complement your outfits—neutral sandals, boots, or even bare feet are great options, depending on the setting.
- Salon Appointments – Haircuts, nails and day-of services. If you’ll look back at your photos and wish you had your roots done or that your littles had fresh haircuts, get those salon appointments on the calendar before your Boston family photography session. Freshen up your manicure (natural nails are great, too!) and plan to do a bit more than your usual makeup application.
- Think About Undergarments – Make sure they aren’t visible or distracting under your clothing, especially with sheer or light-colored fabrics.
