If you’re anything like most moms I work with, you’ve probably Googled “when to take newborn photos” somewhere between packing your hospital bag and wondering how you’re going to function on two hours of sleep.
And then… the pressure starts.
You’ll see things like “best within 5–10 days” and suddenly it feels like if you miss that window, you’ve missed your chance entirely.
Let me reassure you right away:
You have not missed anything.
There is no one “perfect” timeline. There’s just what works best for you, your baby, and this season of life.

When to Take Newborn Photos (What You’ve Likely Been Told…And Why It Doesn’t Always Fit Real Life)
You may have heard newborn photos should take place within the first 5–14 days after birth.
This is when babies tend to:
- Sleep more deeply
- Curl up naturally
- Be easier to pose in those very styled, sleepy positions
If you’ve been researching when to take newborn photos, this is likely what you’ve seen everywhere.
But here’s the part I want you to hear, especially as a mom…
That timeline doesn’t take you into account.
Those first couple of weeks can be a blur of recovery, feeding, very little sleep, and just trying to find your footing in this brand new version of life. The idea that you should also be coordinating and showing up for a photo session during that window can feel like… a lot.
And in my experience, it often is.
I don’t expect families to reach out from the hospital or rush into a session before they’ve had time to settle in. Those early days matter for a different reason.
Yes, that early window can work beautifully for a certain style of photography.
But it’s not the only way. And it’s not always the right fit for every family.

What Actually Matters More Than Timing
And this is where things start to shift a bit.
If you’re wondering when to take newborn photos and that early timeline doesn’t feel realistic or appealing to you, you’re not alone. Most of the families I work with feel the exact same way.
Because the truth is, when to take newborn photos isn’t just about how old your baby is. It’s about how you want this experience to feel.
My approach is a little different. Instead of focusing on perfectly posed, deeply asleep babies, I focus on connection. The way your baby fits in your arms. The way your toddler sneaks in for a hug. The quiet, in-between moments that already feel like your real life.
Because of that, we have a lot more flexibility.
Most of my families come in closer to 2–3 weeks (or even a bit later) once they’ve had time to:
- Recover
- Settle in at home
- Find a rhythm that feels a little more manageable
And that small shift in timing? It makes the entire experience feel calmer, easier, and honestly, more enjoyable.
Is It Too Late for Newborn Photos?
Short answer: no.
Longer answer: it’s almost never too late.
I’ve photographed babies at:
- 2 weeks
- 4 weeks
- 6+ weeks
And those sessions are just as meaningful.
Your baby might:
- Be a little more alert
- Stretch out more instead of curling tightly
- Make more eye contact
And honestly? That can be such a beautiful part of your gallery.
If you’re wondering when to take newborn photos because you feel like you’ve “missed it,” this is your permission to let that go.
What If My Baby Isn’t Sleepy or “Cooperative”?
Another big worry I hear all the time.
Real life: babies don’t follow timelines. Especially not in those early weeks.
That’s why my sessions are baby-led and flexible:
- We pause for feeding
- We take breaks as needed
- We follow your baby’s cues instead of forcing anything
Some of the most loved images come from:
- Wide awake snuggles
- Tiny stretches
- Those in-between moments you didn’t even realize you’d want to remember
You don’t need a “perfect” baby for beautiful photos. You just need your baby. Wondering what a calm, baby-led newborn session looks like? This post is for you!

A Quick Note (Because I Know You’re Thinking It)
If part of you has been putting this off because it feels like one more thing on your plate…
I get it.
But this is also one of those seasons that changes so quickly. And having something tangible to look back on, something your baby will one day see too, really does matter.
If you’re already feeling stretched thin, that’s exactly where a full-service experience can make this feel easy instead of overwhelming. I guide you through the entire process, from what to wear to what actually happens during your session, so you don’t have to figure it out on your own.
Just something to keep in mind 🤍

What to Wear For A Newborn Session
After deciding when to take newborn photos, the planning begins. One of the questions I get most often as a newborn photographer is, “What should we wear for our session?” Totally fair question. Choosing outfits that look great and still feel comfortable can be surprisingly stressful.
The good news? You’re not on your own. I offer a curated client wardrobe, including size inclusive, postpartum friendly dresses that photograph beautifully and feel good to wear.
For dads and siblings, keep things neutral, classic, and comfortable. Skip bright colors, busy patterns, and big logos.

Ready When You Are
If you’re thinking about when to take newborn photos, the best time to reach out is during your pregnancy so I can reserve space around your due date.
From there, we’ll figure out the timing together once your baby arrives.
Because the truth is, there isn’t one perfect answer to when to take newborn photos.
There’s just the timing that feels right for you.
My approach is relaxed, organic, and fully supported from start to finish. Between the client wardrobe, prep guidance, light filled studio space, and custom artwork design, you’re not left to figure things out on your own. I walk with you through all of it.
