If you’re searching for a Connecticut maternity photographer, you’re in the right place. For this session, we headed to Harkness State Park in Waterford, CT — and between the stone archways, the sprawling fields, and the ocean views, it has everything you could want for maternity photos. It offers endless variety without the need to hop in the car and change locations.
Whether you’re local to Connecticut or just visiting the shoreline, Harkness has that rare mix of being both stunning and laid-back. There’s room to move, relax, and just enjoy the moment — which is exactly what makes the photos feel so natural.

The Best Connecticut Maternity Session Location
Harkness State Park in Waterford, CT, is one of those spots that just feels made for maternity photos. You’ve got the best of everything in one place — sweeping lawns, storybook gardens, old stone archways, and the shoreline. That means you can get a gallery full of variety without needing to drive around or feel rushed.
It’s also an easy place to relax. Parking is close, the walking paths are convenient, and there’s plenty of space to spread out. Whether you want quiet, intimate moments with your partner or a little room to move in a flowy dress, Harkness makes it all possible. And the best part? The light here — especially late in the day — is incredible.
Why It Works So Well for Maternity Sessions
As a Connecticut maternity photographer, I’m often asked what types of locations work best photos. And here’s the truth: not all spots are created equal.
Some are beautiful but packed with people. Others have tricky light or are hard to get to (or even worse, don’t have bathroom nearby!!) — which is the last thing you want when you’re pregnant.
Harkness, though? It’s the sweet spot.
Here’s why:
Built-In Variety
- You get stone archways, formal gardens, wide-open lawns, and the beach all in one place. No driving around, no rushing — just equally beautiful, yet different backdrops steps away from each other.
Natural Backdrops
- The greens, neutrals, and coastal tones don’t compete with your outfits. Instead, they make you (and that growing bump!) the star of the photos.
Easy To Get Around
- Parking is close, bathrooms are nearby and you don’t need to trek forever to get beautiful scenery.
Plenty Of Space
- The property is generous, so you don’t have to worry about other people creeping into frame or feeling crowded.
Flattering Light
- You get a little bit of everything! Shade, open sky, golden hour by the water — it’s an ideal spot for maternity photos.
Styling for the Setting
Harkness gives you so many backdrops, your wardrobe can play multiple roles — but the trick is keeping it consistent. Here’s what works best:
If you’re planning a session at Harkness, I usually recommend:
- Soft, neutral tones — creams, sage, muted florals, dusty blue are great options
- Natural fabrics — breathable materials that move easily (think cotton, linen, or flowy dresses)
- Keep it clean and timeless — skip the logos and bold prints
As a Connecticut maternity photographer, all of my sessions include access to my client wardrobe and styling guidance. Whether you want me to pull together options for you or just help refine what you already have, I’ll make sure your outfits feel effortless and look amazing.
Tips for Planning a Session at Harkness Memorial State Park
If you’re thinking about scheduling your own maternity photos at Harkness Memorial State Park, here are a few things to keep in mind:
Consider Sunset
- Golden hour here is beautiful. I personally love starting about 1.5-2 hours before sunset to take advantage of the soft light—allowing us to finish up just as the sun starts to set.
Keep Outfits Soft and Simple
- Neutral tones, soft greens, blues and muted florals look gorgeous against the stonework, gardens, and shoreline. I also provide full styling support and access to my studio wardrobe so you don’t have to overthink outfits.
Give Yourself a Little Extra Time
- With parking close and an easy-to-navigate layout, Harkness is low-stress, but it’s still nice to plan a little buffer. A few extra minutes to adjust hair, account for outfit changes, or just breathe makes the whole session feel calmer.
Why Document This Season?
Pregnancy is wild — some days you feel magical, other days you’re exhausted and wondering how you’ll ever fit into your jeans again. I know it may seem hard to believe now, but this season will pass, faster than you expect.
Taking time for maternity photos isn’t just about nostalgia; it’s about preserving what it felt like to be in this moment — the anticipation, the love, and even the uncomfortable parts. You don’t always feel like you’re glowing (I’ve been there), but this is real.
When you do it at Harkness Memorial State Park, with its calm beauty and room to just be, it doesn’t feel stiff. It feels like you — relaxed, connected, and fully present in this chapter.
Sunset Session At Harkness
We kicked things off at the stone archways — such a pretty spot, but also easy for them to just settle in together. From there we wandered through the gardens and across the open lawn, which gave us a mix of sweet and playful moments. We ended down by the water right as the sun was dipping, and the light was so soft and golden. The whole session felt relaxed, nothing rushed, just the two of them enjoying this season before baby arrives.
