Let me guess- just the thought of taking family photos has you starting to sweat. If you found this post, it’s likely because experiencing easy photo sessions with kids is something you want!
Capturing beautiful family photos is a priority for many parents, but let’s be honest—posing little ones for the camera can feel like herding cats. The good news is, with the right preparation and mindset (and photographer 😉) sessions with kids can be a breeze. In this post, I’m sharing tried-and-true tips for easy photo sessions with kids to ensure a stress-free experience for everyone.

Family Photos Matter
Studies show that displaying family photos creates a sense of belonging, importance and security for children. This boosts their level of confidence and helps to develop their sense of self. How cool is that?! Family photos showcase your favorite memories and remind children of their roots, the love surrounding them, and the support system they can rely on.
You’ll never look back and wish you had fewer photographs with your children. For most of us, the “why” behind our desire for photos is our kiddos. We want to bottle up this phase of life. We want to have tangible memories to look back on. We want to freeze time and capture our children exactly as they are in this season of life.

1. Trust Your Photographer 😉
We all want our kids to be on their best behavior for photos, but if your family is anything like mine- it’ll be a 50/50 shot at best 😅 Kids are going to be kids whether they are having their photos taken or not. My first tip for easy photo sessions with kids: take a deep breath and trust your photographer. A good family photographer knows how to go with the flow, manage kid-filled chaos and get beautiful portraits in the process.
2. Games > Directions
Cracking the code to easy photo sessions with kids isn’t as hard as you think. Enter tip number 2: create an environment where movement, play and silliness are not just allowed, but encouraged! Games like Simon Says, Red Light Green Light and Ring Around the Rosy are easy ways to keep kids engaged and enjoying their photo session. And guess what: you can get kiddos to do almost anything if they think it’s a game or better yet, their idea.

3. Plan Ahead
If you’re a parent, you know that preparation is the key to success. Plan your outfits ahead of time and set everything out the night before. Schedule your session around nap time and fuel up before photos! Even the best strategies are no match for a hangry, over-tired toddler 😅. Pro tip: pack easy, *mess-free* snacks (think fruit snacks, puffs, pretzels) and water to keep them energized and hydrated.
4. Trust is Everything
The single most important thing I do as a photographer before sessions is get to know my families. Asking questions and learning about your kiddos is at the top of my list. On session day, you’ll see me getting on the floor with your little one so she can tell me all about her favorite stuffed animal. I’ll be the one putting on your kiddo’s favorite song so we can have a dance party. My job is to get to know your children, create a welcoming, safe environment and then encourage them to be exactly who they are. Building a genuine connection is such an important part of having easy photo sessions with kids.

5. Pack Your Patience
Did this one make you laugh?! I hope it did! But in all seriousness, kids and chaos kind of go hand-in-hand so set reasonable expectations. Spoiler alert: kids are not going to sit and smile on command for an entire session. THIS IS NORMAL! I know it’s tempting to jump into strict, discipline mode right away, but I can promise you a little chaos is totally expected and can be managed. As a former teacher (and mom of two wild boys) there isn’t much I haven’t seen or dealt with- I’ve got tricks up my sleeve for all kinds of situations!
Moral of the story? Photo sessions with kids don’t have to be overwhelming. With these tips for easy photo sessions with kids, you can transform what might feel like an overwhelming task into a joyful family experience. Relax, have fun, and trust your photographer to document the magic of your little ones just as they are.
