At some point during outfit planning, everyone questions their entire closet.
Somewhere between “this will be easy” and “maybe I should order six new things online” is where most families land.
If you’ve ever stood in front of your closet wondering how something that felt so simple suddenly became complicated, you’re not alone.
Figuring out what to wear for family photos is easily one of the most common stress points I see before a session. And honestly? It doesn’t have to be.
With a few simple guidelines (and a little reassurance), you can pull together family photo outfits that feel comfortable, natural, and photograph beautifully.

Why What You Wear for Family Photos Matters
The goal of family photos isn’t perfectly styled outfits. It’s connection.
That said, what everyone wears does play a role in how your images feel. Certain colors, fabrics, and combinations photograph more softly and timelessly than others. And the right outfits can help everything look cohesive without feeling overly “styled.”
The good news? Figuring out what to wear for family photos doesn’t need to turn into a full family group chat or three late-night online shopping carts.
Instead of thinking about it like coordinating everyone’s outfits down to the last detail, think of it more like creating a color story that feels natural for your family.
A little planning goes a long way… and ideally saves you from the classic “why does nothing we own go together?” moment the night before your session.

Start With Mom’s Outfit First
If you’re wondering where to begin when deciding what to wear for family photos, start with mom.
Not because everything revolves around mom (although…let’s be honest, a lot of family logistics do), but because women’s clothing usually has the most variety in color, pattern, and texture.
Once mom’s outfit is figured out, it becomes much easier to coordinate everyone else around it. Trying to build outfits for the whole family first and then squeeze mom in at the end rarely goes well.
Photographer tip:
- Flowy fabrics, subtle textures, and neutral tones all photograph beautifully and feel timeless.
And if you’re postpartum or newly pregnant, comfort matters just as much as style when it comes to planning what to wear for family photos. The best outfit is always the one you feel good in, not the one that looked perfect on a mannequin five minutes before checkout.

Coordinate, Don’t Match
There’s a time and place for identical white shirts and jeans. Family photos…usually isn’t it.
Instead of matching family photo outfits exactly, aim for colors that complement each other.
Think creams, light blues, sage greens, warm beiges, soft blush tones, and gentle patterns.
When colors stay within a similar palette, outfits feel cohesive without looking like everyone got dressed from the same catalog page.
Photographer tip:
- pick two or three main colors and build outfits around them
Think coordinated…not family uniform.
A Real Family Session: How It Comes Together
This session is a great example of coordinating without matching. Soft neutrals, simple textures, and a shared color palette make everything feel cohesive while still letting each person’s style shine.

Choose Texture Over Bold Patterns
When deciding what to wear for family photos, bold patterns are often where things get tricky.
Large prints, logos, and bright graphics tend to pull attention away from faces.
Instead, look for texture. Texture photographs beautifully and adds interest without overwhelming the image.
When thinking about what to wear for family photos, consider:
- soft knits
- linen fabrics
- linen fabrics
- ribbed sweaters
- lace details
These elements add depth while still keeping the focus where it belongs: your family.
Keep Dad’s Outfit Simple
Dads usually have the easiest job when it comes to family photo outfits.
Neutral button downs, henleys, or lightweight sweaters photograph beautifully. Pair them with simple pants in neutral tones like khaki, navy, or soft gray.
Photographer tip:
- Avoid large logos, chunky sneakers and athletic wear
The goal isn’t anything overly styled. Just comfortable, classic pieces that fit well and complement the rest of the family.

Styling Kids for Family Photos
When it comes to kids, comfort really is everything.
If they feel comfortable in what they’re wearing, they’re usually much more relaxed during photos. And relaxed kids make the whole session easier for everyone.
Photographer tip:
- for toddlers, outfits that let them move freely are a must. Because the odds of them sitting perfectly still for more than a few seconds are…let’s just say, not great.
Soft fabrics, simple dresses, neutral overalls, or classic pieces work beautifully.
And realistically, there’s a good chance someone will refuse their shoes, take out their hair bow, or suddenly become very attached to a stick they found on the ground. So we pick our battles, go with the flow and keep wardrobe the least of our worries.
