Newborn Photos Should Be Taken in the First Few Days of Life

Let’s start with one of the most common myths I hear: that newborn photos must be taken within the first few days of life. Unless you are looking for overly-posed photos (with props and super intricate positions) this is so not true!

I actually encourage the families I work with to wait at least a week, if not two, before coming in for photos. Why? Two reasons…

  • Labor and Delivery Is Different For Everyone
    • Babies are unpredictable and even the best-laid birth plans don’t always go how we expected them too. For some of us, it will take more time that we expected to recover, heal and ease into our new normal!
    • Don’t be afraid to take that extra time to settle in at home, get your bearings a bit before calendar.
  • Baby-Led Posing + A Family-Centered Approach
    • As a Metrowest Boston photographer, I specialize in something a baby-led, family-centered approach. Simple, natural posing is at the heart of my work. We pay close attention to baby cues and the workflow (and timeline!) for our session is very flexible.
    • I typically see newborns between 2-3 weeks old and we get the best of both worlds; plenty of sleepy newborn curls and beautiful, wide eyes as your baby starts to explore the world.

Trust me, your baby’s session will still be just as special if you do it at 2, 4, or even 6 weeks. It’s never too late—your baby will never be as little as they are when you schedule your photos.

Newborn Photography Is Too Expensive—There’s No Way It’s Worth the Investment

I totally get it. As parents, you’re juggling a lot—new baby, work, home life, and all the other little things that come with a growing family. The idea of adding another expense can feel overwhelming. But here’s the thing: time will move faster than you think. Those tiny fingers grasping your hand, the soft breaths as your newborn sleeps in your arms, the way they fit so perfectly against you—these precious moments pass by in the blink of an eye. Take it from me, someone who doesn’t have newborn photos (our twins were born in 2020, just as COVID shut the world down)—they are worth the investment.

You aren’t investing in photos, you are investing in your family, your legacy—you’re preserving memories.

You’re giving your future self the greatest gift—a window back in time.

A window back into the experience, the emotions, and those moments I promise you’ll want to look back on when your baby is all grown up.

As a Metrowest Boston photographer, my signature offering is a truly full-service experience—from a beautifully curated wardrobe and personalized styling to a light-filled studio space and complimentary artwork design. But I also offer simplicity sessions, created for families who love beautiful photographs and a minimal experience.

You’ll never regret taking the photos—only not having them.

All Newborn Photographers Are the Same

A big misconception many people have is that all MetroWest Boston photographers of newborns are the same. Definitely not true! Every photographer has their own style, approach, and personality. Some may focus heavily on traditional posing, while others may prioritize natural moments and authentic connections.

As a Metrowest Boston photographer, I specialize in capturing organic, connection-filled portraits that showcase your baby’s personality and the love your family shares. My goal is to create timeless images that reflect your family’s unique story, without forcing anything.

Whether it’s the look and feel of the images or the way they make you feel during the session, your photographer should be someone you trust and feel comfortable with. You Don’t Need a Professional Photographer—You Can Just Use Your Phone or a Good Camera

Another myth that seems to pop up often is the idea that you don’t need a professional MetroWest Boston photographer if you have a good camera or a smartphone. While smartphones today take amazing pictures, newborn photography requires a bit more than just a fancy camera.

Newborn photography requires more than just a good camera and a love for babies. Safety, posing techniques, and experience all play a huge role in how MetroWest Boston photographers create beautiful newborn images.

Before hiring your MetroWest Boston photographer, make sure to ask:

  • How long have you been photographing newborns?
    • Experience matters! Like your wedding, this is a milestone you can’t get back. Choose a photographer who specializes in babies and families.
  • Do you have any training or certifications in newborn photography safety?
    • Simply put: baby’s comfort and safety > posing or composition. Find a photographer who feels the same way.
  • What is the typical workflow for a newborn session?
    • Depending on their approach to newborn photography, the focus may be baby-only or include the whole family.

A professional photographer brings years of training, experience, and technical know-how to the table. As a MetroWest Boston photographer, I know that working with newborns to capture their natural beauty in soft, timeless images requires expertise. From lighting and composition to editing and retouching, hiring a professional is worth it.

And the best part? You can relax and actually enjoy the process.

TACO OBSESSED, REALITY TV JUNKIE, CHRONIC OVERACHIEVER, LOVER OF BABIES.

As a Boston photographer of newborns and families, nothing makes me happier than preserving memories for my clients. My journey into motherhood was anything but ordinary. We found out we were having identical twins (a huge surprise!) and a few weeks later, the world shut down. It was 2020 and my pregnancy, labor + delivery experience, and postpartum journey were nothing like I expected.

It was a challenging season, filled with anxiety and isolation, and looking back, I have almost no photographs from that time. I know how overwhelming those early days can be, and I want to give other moms what I wish I had—beautiful, tangible memories, without any of the stress.
