Let’s be real: pregnancy is already a wild ride. Add a toddler into the mix and you’re juggling endless snack requests, potty breaks, and emotional rollercoasters on top of, you know, growing a human. So if you’re wondering how on earth you’re supposed to pull off maternity photos with toddler siblings—you’re in good company.
But I’m here to tell you: it is possible.
If you’ve ever thought, “It would be nice to have photos from this season… but planning that sounds like a lot,” you’re not alone.
That’s exactly why my maternity sessions are designed to be simple and full-service. With wardrobe options, a light-filled studio, and help planning the details, the experience is meant to feel easy (yes, even with toddlers in tow!) so you can focus on enjoying this moment before your newest baby arrives.
If documenting this season with timeless, connection-filled portraits sounds like something you’d love, you can learn more about my maternity sessions below.

As a twin mom and a maternity photographer who works with families all over Massachusetts, I’ve seen it all—meltdowns, bribes, unexpected toddler snuggles that make everyone cry (in the best way).
Your maternity session doesn’t have to be perfect to be beautiful.
Why Include Your Toddler in Maternity Photos?
There’s something really special about documenting that last chapter before your family grows. Maternity photos with a toddler aren’t just about celebrating the baby on the way—they’re about honoring your current child’s place in the story.
Whether it’s their first time becoming a big sibling or they’re adding to a growing crew, this is such a tender season to look back on. The way they wrap their arms around your belly, or bury their head in your lap when they get shy—it’s fleeting. And it’s worth preserving.
7 Tips for Maternity Photos with Toddlers
Let’s be honest—toddlers have their own agenda, and it rarely includes smiling on command. But that doesn’t mean maternity photos with toddlers have to be stressful. These tried-and-true tips will help things feel calm, natural, and (dare I say!) even fun.
Let Go of Perfect
Toddlers don’t follow scripts—and honestly, I don’t expect them to. Some of my favorite images from maternity photos with toddlers include giggles mid-movement, kisses that turn into nose boops, and toddlers running wild with joy.
Take Away: The best thing you can do is trust the process. The magic happens in the in-between moments.
Make It Feel Like Play
Toddlers do best when things don’t feel forced. During your maternity photos with a toddler, I’ll guide you with prompts instead of stiff poses. Think: “snuggle up close,” “let’s play peek-a-boo with mama’s dress,” or “show me your silly face.”
Take Away: This is my speciality 😉 My approach keeps kids engaged and parents relaxed—and the result is gorgeous photos that actually feel like you.
Time It Around Your Toddler’s Best Window
We’ll talk through this when planning your session, but generally, maternity photos with a toddler go best when we schedule them around nap time and snack time. A well-rested, well-fed toddler = fewer meltdowns and more sweet snuggles.
Take Away: Whether that means a mid-morning session or golden hour in the early evening, we’ll figure out what works best for your little one.
Keep Outfits Simple (and Comfortable)
This one’s for you and your toddler. For maternity photos with toddlers, think soft textures, muted tones, and nothing too fussy. You don’t want to be adjusting buttons or itchy seams mid-session.
I offer a client wardrobe with beautiful, bump-friendly options for moms and soft basics for littles—so you don’t have to shop or guess what photographs well. I’ll help you coordinate looks that feel cohesive and comfortable for everyone involved.
Take Away: Styling matters and comfort should play a role in your decision-making.
Include Moments Just for the Toddler
It might be a maternity session, but your toddler is the star of the show, too. I always make space during maternity photos with toddler siblings to focus on one-on-one moments—whether it’s them holding your belly, playing with dad, or being gently reminded they’re not being replaced, just getting promoted.
Take Away: These little emotional touchpoints are what make your maternity photos with a toddler feel honest and connected.
Bring Snacks (and Maybe Bribes 🙃)
You know what turns even the unhappiest of toddlers around? SNACKS. Listen, as moms, we are all about making things happen. And if that means a little bribery when it comes to maternity photos with a toddler sibling, I’m here for it. We’ll take breaks when needed, and if that means pausing for a quick snack or blowing bubbles in between shots, it’s all part of the experience.
Take Away: We’ll take breaks when needed and keep our eye on the prize…literally. My treasure chest (full of fun little trinkets for kids) is a fan favorite and the perfect incentive for them to make it through those last few photos.
Trust Me—Really
If you’re feeling nervous about how your child will behave during your maternity photos with toddler siblings, know that I’ve seen it all. Years as a pre-school teacher will do that! So I know toddlers throw curveballs, and that’s okay.
The beauty of working with a photographer who’s also a mom? I don’t expect perfection. I expect goldfish crumbs, rogue hugs, and attention spans that last 90 seconds. That’s why I guide gently, create space for play, and follow the energy of the moment.
Take Away: You’re not in this alone—I’m with you every step of the way.
It’s Not Just About the Baby Bump
It’s easy to think maternity sessions are all about showcasing the bump, but maternity photos with toddler siblings are about so much more than that. They’re about connection, cuddles, chaos, and the quiet moments in between.
You’ll want to remember this sweet, fleeting chapter where you’re holding one baby while growing another.
The bump is part of the story, but so is the way your toddler looks up at you, the way they rest their head on your lap, or the way they cling to your hand a little tighter now that big changes are coming.
These photos celebrate your whole family, not just your pregnancy.
Shop Maternity Clothes

Why Maternity Photos Matter
If you’re planning maternity photos with a toddler in the mix, you already know it might not look like the quiet, peaceful photo session you once imagined. And that’s okay.
These sessions often include a little movement, a little silliness, and sometimes a toddler who would rather explore than pose. But those moments are part of the story too.
Pregnancy moves quickly, even on the days that feel long. Maternity photos give you a chance to pause for a moment and celebrate this season before your newest addition arrives.
If you’re on the fence and wondering whether maternity photos are worth it, I share more about that here: Reasons To Invest in Maternity Photos.
When To Book Maternity Photos
Most maternity sessions take place between 28–32 weeks. Your bump is beautifully visible by then, and you’re usually still feeling comfortable.
Reaching out during your second trimester is ideal so we have time to plan, but if you’re further along, don’t worry. We can often still make it work.
If maternity photos are something you’d love to have but can’t quite imagine finding the time or energy to plan them, that’s exactly where I come in. With wardrobe options, a beautiful studio, and thoughtful planning built in, the whole boston maternity experience is meant to feel easy from start to finish.
