One minute you are learning how to swaddle. The next you are wondering how your newborn suddenly looks like a whole baby instead of a sleepy little burrito.

If you’re starting to think about newborn photos, one of the first decisions you may run into is this: should your newborn session take place at home or in a studio?

As a Framingham newborn photographer, I photograph both types of sessions regularly. And the truth is, there is no single “right” choice. Both options can lead to beautiful, meaningful images of this all-too-fleeting season.

This guide will walk through the differences between in-home newborn sessions and studio newborn sessions, along with the benefits of each, so you can decide what feels best for your family.

Why Location Matters for Newborn Photography

You are navigating life with a brand new baby, likely running on very little sleep, and adjusting to a completely new rhythm at home. The environment where your photos take place can shape how relaxed the experience feels.

As a Framingham newborn photographer, I’ve learned that some families love the idea of documenting those early days right inside their home. Others prefer the simplicity of walking into a fully prepared studio where everything is ready to go.

Both approaches work beautifully. It simply comes down to what type of experience feels easiest and most meaningful for you.

In-Home: What to Expect

An in-home newborn session takes place right in the comfort of your own space. As a Framingham newborn photographer, many of the families I work with love the idea of documenting these early days at home.

When I arrive, we’ll start wherever the best natural light is coming through.

Nursery, bedroom, living room… and honestly, sometimes kitchens, foyers, or even hallways. Whenever the best light presents itself, we make it work.

These sessions tend to feel relaxed and very lifestyle focused. The goal is to document your family together in a way that feels true to this season of life. Read more about in-home newborn sessions here.

Benefits of Newborn Portraits in Your Home

Many families are drawn to newborn portraits at home for a few simple reasons.

Comfort and Familiarity

Your baby already knows the sounds, smells, and rhythm of home. That familiarity can help sessions feel calm and relaxed right from the start.

And for parents who are only a couple weeks postpartum, the idea of not packing the diaper bag like you’re heading out for a full day adventure is pretty appealing.

A Personal, Lifestyle Feel

Framingham newborn portraits in your home naturally include the little details that make your family unique.

The nursery you carefully prepared.
The cozy corner where you rock your baby.

These elements add a storytelling quality to the photos that many families love.

Flexible and Relaxed

In-home sessions follow the natural rhythm of the morning. If baby needs to eat, we pause. If a toddler needs a snack break, we roll with it. While all of this happens in the studio as well, there’s an added layer of relaxation (especially for siblings!) when you’re at home.

At the Studio: What to Expect

A studio newborn session takes place in a space designed specifically for photographing new babies and their families.

As a Framingham newborn photographer, my studio is intentionally simple, calm, and filled with beautiful natural light. Everything is already prepared before you arrive, from cozy seating to soft blankets and wardrobe options for moms and newborns.

That means when you walk in, there’s nothing you need to set up, clean, or think about. You can just settle in, take a breath, and focus on your baby. Read more about studio newborn sessions here.

Benefits of Studio Portraits

While in-home sessions have their own charm, studio sessions offer a different kind of ease.

Everything Is Ready for You

One of the biggest advantages of a studio session is that the entire space is already designed for photos.

  • Soft neutral backdrops
  • Comfortable seating
  • Beautiful window light
  • A curated wardrobe for moms and newborns

Consistent, Light-Filled Environment

Lighting plays a big role in newborn photography. A studio allows for consistency and creates a clean, timeless look that many families love.

Framingham newborn photographer tip: If your home has a tricky layout or limited natural light, a studio session can sometimes be the easier option. The lighting is already dialed in, so you know you’ll get the same soft, light-filled look you see throughout my portfolio.

A Calm, Distraction-Free Space

Studio sessions are intentionally simple.

Without the usual household distractions, parents often find it easier to focus on the moment.

And toddlers sometimes enjoy the novelty of visiting a new space. It can feel like a little outing rather than a morning at home.

What to Wear For A Newborn Session

One of the most common questions I get as a Framingham newborn photographer is, “What should we wear for our session?” Totally fair question. Choosing outfits that look great and still feel comfortable can be surprisingly stressful.

The good news? You’re not on your own. I offer a curated client wardrobe, including size inclusive, postpartum friendly dresses that photograph beautifully and feel good to wear. Baby is covered too with wraps, blankets and simple pieces.

Whether you want to shop your own closet or borrow from mine, we’ll pull everything together in a way that feels effortless and true to you.

For dads and siblings, keep things neutral, classic, and comfortable. Skip bright colors, busy patterns, and big logos.

Finding A Framingham Newborn Photographer

Choosing a Framingham newborn photographer is about more than just pretty pictures. It’s about finding someone who gets your family, understands your season, and can guide you through the process without adding stress.

Whether your session happens in a studio or in your home, the goal is the same. Honest moments. Real connection. The little details that already mean everything to you.

My approach is relaxed, organic, and fully supported from start to finish. Between the studio wardrobe, prep guidance, light filled studio space, and custom artwork design, you’re not left to figure things out on your own. I walk with you through it.

If you’re looking for a Framingham newborn photographer, I’d love to connect and hear what you’re envisioning. You can reach out here and I’ll help you decide what feels like the best fit for your family.

As a Boston photographer of newborns and families, nothing makes me happier than preserving memories for my clients. My journey into motherhood was anything but ordinary. We found out we were having identical twins (a huge surprise!) and a few weeks later, the world shut down. It was 2020 and my pregnancy, labor + delivery experience, and postpartum journey were nothing like I expected.

It was a challenging season, filled with anxiety and isolation, and looking back, I have almost no photographs from that time. I know how overwhelming those early days can be, and I want to give other moms what I wish I had—beautiful, tangible memories, without any of the stress.
