If you’re wondering whether your dog can be part of your newborn session, the answer is absolutely yes! Boston newborn photos with dogs are some of my favorite sessions to document because they show the full story of your growing family. For many parents, their pup was their first “baby” — so it only makes sense to include them when welcoming the newest little love into your home.
The good news: it’s totally possible to include your dog in a way that feels natural, safe, and fun. Here are my best tips to set you (and your pup) up for a successful session.

Why Include Your Dog in Newborn Photos?
Dogs bring so much heart (and sometimes a little comedy) into newborn sessions. From curling up at your feet to sneaking in a kiss on tiny toes, they have a way of reminding us that family isn’t complete without them. And while the idea of combining a brand-new baby with an energetic pup might feel overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. With a little planning, we can make the experience smooth, safe, and genuinely sweet.

Tips for a Successful Newborn Photos With Dogs
Including your dog in your newborn session doesn’t have to feel stressful. With a few simple adjustments, you can help things run smoothly and make sure everyone — baby, pup, and parents — feels comfortable.
Assess Your Dog’s Temperament
- Is your pup the type to flop on the couch and nap through anything, or are they more of a “zoomies on repeat” personality? Being honest about how your dog reacts helps me know what to expect so we can work with their energy instead of against it.
The Studio Is Pup-Approved
- Some pups are total homebodies — if yours is happiest in their own space, an in-home newborn session is a great choice. Everything feels familiar, which keeps stress levels low and makes the photos extra cozy and personal.
- But if cleaning up the house feels like one more thing on the never-ending to-do list, don’t worry. My studio is dog-friendly, and it’s the perfect spot if you want a clean, light-filled backdrop without the prep work. As a fellow dog mom, please know your pup is just as welcome there as the rest of the family!
Bring in Backup (If It Helps)
- Not every family needs an extra set of hands — if your dog is super easygoing, they can usually just hang out while we work. But if you know your pup does better with a little structure, having someone lend a hand can make things easier.
- In the studio, that might mean your pup comes just for the first or last part of the session. At home, it could be a friend or grandparent taking them for a walk or giving them extra attention in between photos.
Keep It Short and Sweet
- Dogs are kind of like toddlers — adorable, unpredictable, and not exactly known for their patience. That’s why we keep their part of the session short and fun. A handful of sweet, relaxed moments is usually all it takes before they’re ready for a break.
Treats and Toys (but Not Too Many)
- Yes, treats can work wonders — but too many and suddenly your dog is bouncing off the walls. Bring a few favorites, maybe a squeaky toy or blanket, and we’ll use them strategically to get those sweet, cooperative moments for your newborn photos with dogs.
Safety Always Comes First
When it comes to Boston newborn photos with dogs, safety is always the top priority. Dogs are naturally curious, and adding a baby into the mix is a big change for them. I’ll never push interaction — instead, I set things up so your pup can be nearby in ways that feel natural and safe for everyone. Most often that means baby is in your arms while your dog settles close by.
Some of the sweetest photos happen when we follow your dog’s lead. Maybe they wander over for a gentle sniff, or maybe they decide their role is to nap at your feet. Either way, keeping the atmosphere relaxed ensures we capture images that feel real, secure, and full of love.
In Home Newborn Photos with Dogs
Some of my favorite sessions happen right at home, where families feel most comfortable and pups can be part of the story. These Boston newborn photos with dogs are from a few different in-home sessions, each one filled with its own little moments — a dog watching over the crib, snuggling close on the couch, or simply stretching out on a favorite sunny spot.
What I love most is how natural it all feels. There’s no pressure for perfection — just genuine connection in the spaces where life with a new baby (and a loyal pup) really unfolds.

Ready for Photos Without the Stress?
Bringing your pup into newborn photos doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. With a little planning — whether it’s choosing the right setting, keeping things short and sweet, or bringing a few treats — Boston newborn photos with dogs can be fun, relaxed, and full of heart.
