Hiring a family photographer for toddlers isn’t just about getting cute pictures — it’s about working with someone who understands the unpredictable, snack-demanding, nap-skipping reality of this stage of life.

If you’ve ever tried to take a nice family photo with a toddler, you know it’s a lot like herding cats… if the cats had sticky hands, unpredictable moods, and an uncanny ability to run in the opposite direction at the exact moment you’re ready to click the shutter.

This is why finding one who actually gets it is a game-changer. In this stage, it’s not just about the photos — it’s about creating an experience where your toddler can be themselves and you can actually enjoy the process.

What Makes a Family Photographer for Toddlers Different

Toddlers are equal parts adorable and unpredictable. A good family photographer for toddlers knows the magic happens in the chaos — and works with it, not against it.

Instead of stiff poses and “say cheese,” we’ll chase bubbles, play games, and let your child show off their very best dinosaur roar. The result? Photos that feel real, full of life, and true to your family.

How to Spot One Who “Gets It”

Not every photographer is built for toddler energy. The right one will…

Have Endless Patience

  • (and probably a ridiculous collection of silly faces)

Work Quickly When It Matters

  • attention spans are short, so we make every second count

Follow Their Lead

  • some of the best moments happen when toddlers are calling the shots

Celebrate The Imperfect

  • goldfish crumbs and wild curls are part of the story

Styling Tips for Toddler Sessions

Toddler outfits should be comfy, breathable, and easy to move in—because that’s exactly what they’ll do. As a family photographer for toddlers, I always recommend soft layers instead of stiff dresses, and clothing that invites play, not protest.

For adults? Stick to soft, complementary tones that keep the focus on your connection, not color clashes. And wear something you’re happy to bend, crouch, and play in too—you’ll be moving right along with them.

Planning a Session with Toddlers in Mind

Timing is everything: plan around nap schedules, and come prepared with snacks, water, and one favorite toy (for comfort or bribery—whatever works!). A true family photographer for toddlers will offer generous breaks, flexible pacing, and choose locations that let your toddler explore, not just stand in place.

Consider the Best Time of Day

  • Early morning or late afternoon (aka golden hour) gives a soft, flattering light that’s easier on little eyes and makes everything feel dreamy. Bonus: these times often align well with post-nap moods.

Keep Outfits Simple and Comfortable

  • Soft fabrics, easy layers, and no scratchy tags keep toddlers happy. I also offer full styling support and a client wardrobe to make getting dressed stress-free.

Arrive with Time to Spare

  • Giving everyone a few extra minutes to settle in helps avoid rushing, which toddlers pick up on instantly. It’s worth it for calmer faces and happier parents.

Don’t Stress the Kids

  • A toddler’s version of “cooperating” might be exploring, running, or showing you their latest dance moves—and that’s okay. The best photos come when kids are free to be themselves.

Why This Stage Matters

The toddler years move fast. One day they’re wobbling toward you with outstretched arms, and before you know it, they’re running ahead without looking back.

Photos from this stage capture the little things you don’t want to forget—those quick smiles, small hands in yours, and the way they fit perfectly on your hip. It’s a short season, but one you’ll always want to hold onto.

Newborn Session With Toddlers

One of the best parts of being a family photographer for toddlers is watching big siblings step into their new role during a newborn session. Sometimes it’s with proud, gentle snuggles… other times it’s with a burst of energy that has nothing to do with the baby and everything to do with being two years old.

This session was such a perfect example. Big sister bounced between giving kisses, showing off her twirls, and making sure her new baby brother had plenty of attention (and maybe a few pokes of curiosity). These photos aren’t about perfectly posed moments—they’re about the real connections, the sibling sweetness, and even the silly in-between that makes this season so special.

Ready for Photos Without the Stress?

If you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re convinced your toddler won’t sit still, smile on cue, or keep their shirt clean for more than five minutes… you’re not alone. But here’s the thing—none of that actually matters.

With the right family photographer for toddlers, sessions aren’t about perfection. They’re about playing together, snuggling in close, and letting your child’s real personality shine through (yes, even if that means we take a snack break or two).

So if you’ve been waiting for the “perfect” stage, this is your sign to just go for it. We’ll create photos that feel like your family—beautiful, joy-filled, and wonderfully real.

As a Boston photographer of newborns and families, nothing makes me happier than preserving memories for my clients. My journey into motherhood was anything but ordinary. We found out we were having identical twins (a huge surprise!) and a few weeks later, the world shut down. It was 2020 and my pregnancy, labor + delivery experience, and postpartum journey were nothing like I expected.

It was a challenging season, filled with anxiety and isolation, and looking back, I have almost no photographs from that time. I know how overwhelming those early days can be, and I want to give other moms what I wish I had—beautiful, tangible memories, without any of the stress.
